The following archival photographs date from the mid 1950's to the early 1960's. The buildings were rephotographed from approximately the same angle in the Fall semester of 1999. Enjoy!



 

College Union / College Hall

College Union circa 1955

Dedicated in 1951, the College Union served as the social and cultural center of campus. The building consisted of numerous lounges and dining facilities. A music room, reading room, mail room, and snack bar all contributed toward leisure time activities.

Today, College Hall houses the English, Black Studies, Music, and Music Therapy departments, as well as the Honors Center. 

 

 

 


 

Main Building / Old Main

Main Building circa 1961 Completed in 1908, the Main Building served as the focal point of campus for over 45 years. Although the building consisted mainly of classrooms and adminisrative offices, it also housed a library, indoor track, and gymnasium.

Today, Old Main is home to the School of Education, the Curriculum Center, and the Art History Department. 

 


College Library / Old Library

 

College Library circa 1955 Opened in 1954, the College Library served as the intellectual center of campus. The library contained approximately 30,000 books and subscribed to over 350 journals. The library consisted of a main reading room, as well as a browsing and reference room. Overdue book fines were 3¢ a day.

Old Library circa 1999 Today, the Old Library houses the Photography and Graphic Design departments.
