Library Lending Laptops now have access to the N drive
Previously library lending laptops only had access to the web now there's a way to logon and gain access to your N: drive network folder. When the laptops start up first you log on to the wireless network. The next page that comes up has some simple instructions for logging onto the Academic Computing network where you N: drive network folder is.
This is entirely optional, once you get to that page you can use the web and save files to your USB drive if you wish.
If you do log in for direct access to your N: drive the laptop will behave much more like a regular wired network PC. You can open and save files directly to the N: drive from any program. Also you will be able to print without having to go to the release print jobs web page.
Here is a video that shows how to log on to access your N: drive.
Inside the Library Only and Take Care
These must stay inside the library security gate. You can use them upstairs or down but not out to the lobby. There is a 3 hour lending period. Take good care of them and don't let them out of your sight.
If you have to save to the PC save to the S: Drive or My Documents
The S: drive will be safe if the battery dies or the system crashes. All other locations are not safe if the system crashes. Our security system wipes out all files added and changes made to the main hard drive every time a laptop restarts even if the PC crashes.
The S: drive is not a network drive so save to your own disk often. See Saving Options
iPrint Printing System Available on the wireless network
The new iPrint program allows you to print from the laptops to the campus printing quota system. You can print to any library public printer. The iPrint program on the laptops requires 2 additional logins and you must login to them in the right order. Quick instructions are below or click here for the detailed instructions.
- To Print:
- Login to the campus wireless web login with your NPCUID/Banner number as soon as laptop starts. If the iPrint login box pops up ignore it untill after the campus wireless login.
- The first time you print the iPrint login will pop up. Login to that also.
- When you're done printing you release your print jobs with the release shortcut. It is by the start button & on the desktop & on the start menu so you can't miss it.
- Login to the release print jobs web page. That is the final login prompt I promise.
- Select the jobs you want to print from the list and click print. Click in the top check box on the page to select all print jobs.
Now wireless printing is available for your own laptop too
The campus has made wireless printing available for students and faculty and the library has made Printer 3 available for wireless patrons in the library.
Laptop Power - Batteries Or Plug-In
We will try to give you a charged battery in your laptop and if we can't we will provide a power adapter so you can plug in. If you have to plug in please try not to string the chord across where people may walk. Use an outlet under your table or sit right next to the outlet you plug into. Power outlets are under many of the work tables upstairs and on the lower floors are along the exterior walls.
Sound and Headphones
You can check out headphones when you check out a laptop but it is best if you have your own. The sound is off by default you can turn it on with the FN and END keyboard combination or with the sound / speaker icon by the clock. Only turn the sound on when you have headphones plugged in.
Bring A USB Drive or a Blank CD with You
You should bring your own files storage medium with you and be familiar with how to use it.
Your choices are:
- A writable CD with room for more files
- A USB memory drive
An Alternative Ways to Access the N:Drive
- There may be times when you can't login to access the N drive directly the campus terminal can give you access.
- You can log on to the SUNY NP terminal server from the laptops
- It will open up with a new desktop right over the laptop desktop
- Inside My Computer on the terminal server You will see your N drive and the S:drive on the laptop
- The S drive contains The Laptops Desktop files and My Documents files
- Just find your files on the S: drive and drag and drop them into your N: drive
Web access to you N:Drive from anywhere in the world
The campus gives some network space to every student for file storage. This shows as drive N: when you log onto a PC in the labs or the library. You can also access this file storage on the web. The laptops can only access this via the web and we have provided a shortcut on the desktop and bookmarks in the web browsers that take you to this login.
When you click on this link below a login prompt will ask you for your NPCUID and password. After you login you will see a web page with folders on the left click on the one labeled DriveN. This will show the contents of your N Drive on the right and a series of menus starting with "File" just above.
To upload a file just click on the File menu link and choose "Upload". In the file upload box click the browse button to select your file and click the Plus sign at the end of that box to select a second file or third etc.
To open a file you must download it and when finished with the file you must up load it again like it says above. NOTE: When you open a file save it right away to your desktop or documents folder so you can find it to upload later.

All About Campus Wireless Networking
The campus wireless is not encrypted so you should be careful what passwords and other personal information you share like credit card numbers. Be sure you are connected to a secure web site before you use passwords or other personal numbers. You can tell secure web sites because the address will begin with HTTPS:// instead of HTTP://.
Wireless networking is only available to SUNY New Paltz students, faculty, and staff, it requires your New Paltz Computer User's ID
