Reference Books

Reference materials such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, or directories contain precise and authoritative facts, data, and background information. Business reference books provide industry & company information, as well as market share data and other financial statistics. (The Reference section is on the main floor of the library). The Business reference books are easy to browse. The call number range is [HC-HJ].

Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios [Ref HF5681.R25 A44]: Covers North America (U.S., Canada, and Mexico). Gives financial and operating ratios for 181 lines of business. It covers both private and public company data and gives a 10 year summary in the “trends” section. There is a time lag for some information because this source uses tax returns as a source of calculation.

American Generations [Ref HC110.C6 A547]: Profiles demographic and attitudinal characteristics of Americans. Areas covered are: attitudes and behavior, education, health, households, housing, income, labor force, population, spending, and wealth. Other titles in the American Generations series profile particular groups.

Editor & Publisher Market Guide [Ref HF5905.E38]: Provides general statistics on all MSA's in the United States, as well as facts and figures about all United States daily newspaper markets, and income and household figures by city/county within each state.

Household Spending [Ref HC110.C6 H68]: Contains statistics on consumer spending. The data included in this source refer to the two years prior to the date of publication (i.e. the 2003 publication covers 2001 information).

Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands [Ref HF5389.M67 2006] [Stacks HF5389.M67 2006]: Contains information about cultural overviews, behavior styles, negotiating techniques, protocol, and business practices. The library also owns a "Kiss, Bow,...in Europe: How to Do Business in 25 European Countries" [Stacks HF5389.M67 2007]

Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys [Ref HC106.6 .S74]: Detailed industry profiles list key industry ratios and statistics, and provide comparative data on selected companies in the industry. The top resource for industry analysis. Only available in print.

Statistical Abstract of the United States [Reference Desk HA202 .S838] This annual publication of the U.S. Census Bureau provides the highlights of statistics gathered on a regular basis by both government and private sources.  In some cases, relevant web sites are included in the citations. Find country wide statistics on population, wages, crime, health, education, government expenditures, prices, sales etc.  Access the Statistical Abstract online at http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/.

checkmarkSearch the Business & Company Resource Center database, provides information on a company including profiles, industry rankings, investment reports, financial ratios, stock quotes, board of directors, history, associations and industry overviews. There are also journal articles about a company. The database may be search by company name, ticker symbol, geographically or NAICS code. Financial data and ratios are indicated by a tab under the company's name. This database contains many reference books that we have in the library, such as Brands and Their Companies; Encyclopedia of American Industries, Encyclopedia of Global Industries, Encyclopedia of Emerging Industries, Business Rankings Annual; International Directory of Company Histories; Market Share Reporter; Notable Corporate Chronologies.
